Take active part in clean and green campaign- MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Mampong, Mr Thomas Appiah Kubi has urged heads of department of the Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region to take active part in the clean and green campaign. He said the campaign is part of government’s determination towards ensuring a clean environment.

The MCE made the call during a Clean and Green Campaign Engagement with Heads of Department at Mampong on Monday June 24, 2019 to enable them to be abreast and aware of the President’s initiative, and undertake massive public education on the issue.

Hon. Thomas Appiah Kubi said, Heads of department must be seen demonstrating a high form of participation in the cleaning and greening of the environment. They should serve not only as campaigners but also as practitioners and role models for others to emulate, he added.

He explained that heads of department must leadtheir staff in the attitudinal change drive towards the sustenance of the campaign.

In a presentation, the Municipal Director of NCCE, Mr. De-Graft Kpobi gave more details into the purpose of the meeting. He highlighted some of the environmental challenges confronting the country, indicating the effects on the economy and on the ecology.

He pointed out that, less than 3% of the plastic waste is recycled. He suggested that, adopting of what is termed as 3Rs in the fight against plastic waste, where plastic should serve as Resource, be Re-used, and Recycled in order to serve as employment avenue and revenue generation.

The Municipal Environmental Officer, Mr. Charles YeboahAsiedu admonished heads of department to play supervisory role by forming Departmental Sub-committee on Clean and Green Campaign at their various units and departments to oversee the sanitation aspects of their immediate surroundings, as well as ensuring the planting, nurturing and sustenance of planted seedlings in their residences and appropriate areas.

Departmental Heads at the meeting agreed that a programme of this nature demands the active involvement and participation of traditional authorities especially in the crusade and enforcement of laws on sanitation and environment to apprehend offenders and serve as deterrent to others.

They also accepted that, the issue of waste needs a holistic approach. Recycling and the use of incinerators was suggested as ways of dealing with waste. It was pointed out that the establishment of recycling plants and enforcement of laws regulating the production of plastics and waste collection needs to be adopted if we want to win the war against waste in the country.

Members assured to do their possible best to ensure the success of the Clean and Green Campaign in the Mampong Municipality.
