Veep encourages youth to embrace farming
The Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that, the NPP-government intends to make farming less tedious and rather profitable and attractive farmers across the country.

He has, therefore, encouraged the youth to go into farming and make the most of the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) programme.

This was contained in a speech read on his behalf on by Mr. Boniface Abubakar Saddique during the celebration of the 28th Yam Festival of the chiefs and people of Ejura in the Ejura-Sekyeredumase Municipality in the Ashanti Region.

The Sekyere (Yam) Festival is an annual event. This year’s festival was on the theme: “Our Health Our Wealth”.

The festival was organized by the Ejura Divisional Council to show appreciation to their ancestors and the gods of the land for providing them with bumper harvests of fresh Yam in times past.

The Friday’s colorful durbar of the chiefs and people was the climax of week-long activities marking this year’s festival.

The Vice-President commented on the one district one warehouse policy of the government and said the initiative was to address post harvest losses and ensure stable market for farm produce.

He called on agricultural officers to intensify their education on the use of pesticides and weedicides to enable farmers to derive their full benefits.

Dr. Bawumia said the free senior high school programme had come to stay stressing that, government would spare no effort to ensure bright future for the Ghanaian child.

He spoke highly of the double track system saying it addressed the neglect of the Ghanaian child over the years and provided opportunity to enroll more students and also make the work of teachers easier.

Dr. Bawumia made reference to the theme for the celebration and said “if we are not healthy our material wealth means nothing to us”.

He cautioned against excessive alcohol intake, smoking of wee and the use of tramadol which he said did not promote good health.
The Vice President said quality healthcare delivery was one of the priorities of government and reiterated the government’s commitment to deliver on this mandate.

On behalf of the government Mr. Boniface Sadiqque made a donation of Twenty Thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢20,000.00) and assorted drinks towards the celebration and construction of a doctor’s bungalow and nurses quarters at Ejura. The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei Mensah said festivals promote unity and took stock of failures and achievements with the ultimate goal of promoting development.

He advised those entrusted with the construction of the Doctor’s bungalow and nurses quarters to be sincere and honest in all their dealings to make the project a success.

The Chief of Ejura, Nana Osei Hwedie II, who is also the Adontehene of the Asante Mampong Traditional Area in his welcome address said the goal of this year Yam festival was to appeal for funds to construct a Doctor’s bungalow and nurse’s quarters at Ejura.

According to him, accommodation for the Ejura Municipal Doctor and other health workers posed a major challenge not only to the municipal assembly but also to the chiefs and the people in the municipality.

He gave the assurance that the Ejura Divisional Council and stakeholders involved in the construction of the bungalow would account for every pesewa donated towards the project and therefore appealed for support from all well meaning Ghanaians.

Present at the function were some members of the royal family of Swaziland, the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Lt. Gen. Obed Akwa, the Deputy IGP, COP Oppong Boanuh and Primate of the Province of West African Anglican Church, Archbishop Daniel Yinkah Sarfo.

Also present were the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Ejura-Sekyeredumasi Municipal Assembly CEO, Alhaji Salisu Bamba and the Regional Director of the Information Services Department (ISD), Nana Akrasi Sarpong.
