BAWKU W: DCE applauds gov’t over re-organisation of the agric sector
Madam Victoria Ayamba, District Chief Executive of the Bawku West District, has applauded government for the reorganisation of the agriculture sector since assuming office.

She noted that interventions by government in the agriculture sector particularly the "Planting for Food and Jobs" initiative has actually brought some relieve to farmers; and motivated a lot of people to into farming this year. This, she noted, attest to the importance the president and for that matter the president attaches to Agriculture.




The DCE who was speaking at the 33rd farmers' Day celebration also disclosed that under the planting for food and jobs programme, a total number of 1,555 farmers benefited from the programme in the district consisting of 804 males and 751 females.

The support from government to beneficiary farmers also include 14,412 bags of fertilizer comprising both NPK and Amonia, bags of seeds were supplied to the District. A total of 1,555 farmers benefited from the programme.




"The District therefore expects a total production of maize to stand at 3,325.68 tones by the end of the season", she added.

Additionally, the government and other development partners have put a number of measures in place to undertake some interventions.




Among which include the sustainable land and water management project that is currently running in 10 communities of our district. These communities are currently undertaking integrated soil fertility and water conservation management.

These communities are therefore taken through: amongst others, Compost preparation and utilization by “ZAI” or spot placement; Maize, soyabean inter-cropping, among others.




“In the Bawku West District 430 farmers made up of 178 males and 252 females are benefiting from the project. The project is also supporting the growing of trees. A total area of 102 hectors has been covered in the District.

She was also delighted that the district through the support of the government with the supply of 380 liters of chemicals was able to contain the fall army worm menace.




The DCE commended the farmers particularly the award winners for their contributions to food security and nutrition and urged them to do more to help the district and country achieve food security.




She reminded the youth to take up the challenge of farming since government has shown willingness to assist them to be successful in their farming business through its various interventions.
