African Youth Day marked in Sunyani
African youth day, a day set aside on 1st November every year to promote and increase awareness and recognition of youthful persons as key and critical agents of positive social change and economic growth in all aspects of Africa society has been marked in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Various youth groups marched through the principal streets of Sunyani with placards, some of them read ‘youth entrepreneurship a key to development, youth entrepreneurs can solve youth unemployment, youth entrepreneurs are agents of positive change and promoting the entrepreneurial ethics’.

The theme for this year’s celebration was Mr. Evans Opoku Bobie the Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asunafo North, in his speech to mark the occasion called on the youth and stakeholders to use the day to discuss issues as the need or otherwise to review the National Youth Policy Implementation Action Plan launch in 2010 and 2014 respectively to make them more appropriate and relevant to contemporarily trends in youth development.

The Deputy Minister noted that it was imperative to continually engage the youth in consultative dialogues as well as providing avenues for the youth to participate in decision making process at all levels of development planning.

Touching on the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘promoting the entrepreneurial sprite of the youth for employment’, the Deputy Minister said it should was a wake-up call for Africa and in particular Ghana to initiate development policies that put the young people as architects and ultimate beneficiaries. He called on the youth to take advantage and ultimately be beneficiaries of government interventions such as ‘planting for foods and jobs, one district on factory, one district one warehouse and Free Senior High School policies’.

He urged the youth to take active part on social, economic and political issues affecting their communities since they constitute the greater part of the nation population.
On entrepreneurship, the Deputy Minister advice the youth to have vision, be God fearing, self-determination and financially discipline. “You can never be successful if you are not financially discipline in life” he cautioned. He noted that for Ghana to create more jobs for the youth and develop, private sector must be the engine of growth.

Mr. Pascal Assan Edwards, the Brong Ahafo Regional Director of National Youth Authority in his welcome address to mark the occasion noted it was a day set aside to celebrate the contribution of African youth, create opportunity to channel youth motivation, energy and creativity toward political, Social and economic renewal.

Mr. Pascal also noted that the Youth Day served as a symposium to create a platform for young entrepreneurs in the Region to share experiences of their business /investments to whip up the youth interest on entrepreneurship. He said the symposium aimed at encouraging others to be creative and innovative to overcome economic and employment challenges that the youth were confronted with.

The Regional Youth Director added that this year’s symposium was organized to provide information on competency based training for young people (including persons with disabilities) in economic activities. Other objectives were to showcase young entrepreneurs and to stimulate discussions on entrepreneurs to inspire peers in economic ventures and to stimulate abilities on the youth.

Mr. Paschal emphasized that the symposium was to enable the youth/participants identify their individual talents and skills which would enable them become the decider and master of their own destiny as well as being eager to impact positively to the development.
