Cuban Ambassador pays a courtesy call on the Mayor of Tamale

The Mayor of Tamale has received Her Excellency, Anette Chao Gorcia, and Cuban Ambassador to Ghana on a courtesy call. Her visit was part of a one-day monitoring tour of the Northern Region.

She was in the company of the Director of External Health Corporations, Dr. Adam Hafiz Taher.

In his welcome remarks, the Mayor of Tamale, recounted the long standing bilateral relations between the two countries dating back in the days of Ghana’s first president, H. E. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Expressing his joy for what he described as historic, Mayor Sule called for conscious but sustainable efforts at strengthening the tides for the mutual benefit of our governments and people.

He however used the occasion to appeal to the Cuban medical brigade through the Ambassador, for a deployment of specialists to fill the gaps at the West and Central Hospitals, both in Tamale. This, he noted, will help reduce the pressure at the Tamale Teaching Hospital among other reliefs.

He commended the Cuban Government for establishing a medical brigade in Ghana decades ago, which intervention has contributed significantly to augmenting Ghana Government's capacity to deliver quality health care, especially in less endowed communities across the country.

Being the first ever female Cuban Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Anette Chao was happy for the usual Ghanaian hospitality, noting that her visit to Tamale was her first international assignment outside the capital Accra, since the start of her mission in the country barely 3 months ago.

She assured the Mayor and indeed the good people of the metropolis, her commitments to creating a lot more opportunities to leverage on her country's rich medical and industrial resource base. It was disclosed that over 200 Ghanaian students are currently pursuing medicine in Cuba on scholarship offered by the Cuban Government. Upon completion they are expected to help augment the county's medical staff strength.

On his part, the Director of External Health Corporations of Ghana’s Ministry of Health, Dr. Adam Hafiz Tahir, on his part spoke about plans to include a few more relatively unexplored areas including preventive medicine and public health care issues in their subsequent interventions. This, he indicated, forms part of the ministry's comprehensive plans to reduce preventable endemic infections.

Dr. Adam also hinted a rather far advanced plans to establish a larvae site around the Tamale Airport area among other biological technology solutions designed to feed on young mosquitoes that otherwise grow in to adult mosquitoes to cause malaria, which disease has claimed and continues to claim tens of thousands of precious lives across the sub region.
